Description
Experience three Japanese traditions as one meaningful full-day journey through stillness, hospitality, and personal expression.
Begin with authentic Zen meditation led by a resident monk at a quiet Tokyo temple. Continue to a formal tea ceremony with seasonal wagashi and plant-based shojin cuisine. Finish the day by learning Japanese calligraphy and creating a personal artwork to take home.
An English-speaking guide supports you throughout the private program, helping you understand the cultural background while respecting the quiet and formal moments of each experience.
Begin with monk-led Zen meditation
Meet your guide at a neighborhood Buddhist temple and step away from the pace of central Tokyo.
A resident monk will introduce the basic posture, breathing, and awareness used in zazen, the seated meditation practice associated with Zen Buddhism.
Begin with a short trial session before taking part in the main meditation. The program is designed to be accessible to first-time participants, and cushions or chairs may be available for guests who find sitting on the floor difficult.
The keisaku, a flat wooden encouragement stick traditionally used to help restore concentration, is offered only to participants who specifically request it.
During the session, focus on your breathing, posture, and the experience of returning your attention to the present moment.
Learn the meaning behind Japanese tea hospitality
After the temple experience, travel with your guide to a dedicated tearoom.
Learn how to enter the room, bow, sit, receive the tea bowl, and observe the movements used to prepare matcha.
Your host will introduce selected elements of temae, the structured procedure through which tea is prepared and served.
Rather than simply watching a performance, notice how the utensils, seasonal decorations, movement, silence, and consideration for the guest work together to create the tea experience.
Enjoy seasonal shojin cuisine
The tea program includes a seasonal shojin meal inspired by Buddhist plant-based cooking traditions.
The menu expresses the season through ingredients, colors, textures, and presentation. Meat and fish are not used, although the exact menu changes according to season and availability.
Before the tour, select whether you prefer the meal with or without the five pungent roots, such as garlic, onion, leek, chive, and scallion.
Please inform us of allergies and dietary restrictions at least 48 hours before the experience.
Whisk your own bowl of matcha
After observing the tea host, prepare your own bowl of usucha, or thin matcha.
Learn how to hold the bamboo whisk, combine the powdered tea with hot water, and create a smooth layer of foam.
Enjoy your matcha with seasonal wagashi and discover how sweetness, bitterness, utensils, and presentation are balanced within the Way of Tea.
Create a personal calligraphy artwork
The final part of the day is a hands-on Japanese calligraphy workshop.
Learn how to hold the brush, control the amount of ink, position your body, and form basic strokes.
After practicing, choose your name in kanji or a meaningful Japanese character for your final work.
Your instructor will help you understand the balance, spacing, direction, and rhythm of the character rather than simply copying a finished example.
Complete your artwork on a traditional shikishi board and take it home as a personal record of your day in Tokyo.
Experience three paths to mindfulness
The program is designed to connect the three traditions rather than present them as unrelated activities.
Zen meditation develops awareness through posture and breathing. The tea ceremony expresses mindfulness through hospitality and attention to detail. Calligraphy turns concentration and movement into a visible form.
Your guide provides explanations and interpretation throughout the day while preserving the quiet atmosphere of the temple, the formality of the tearoom, and the individual focus of the calligraphy workshop.
