Print ItineraryExperience Japan’s national sport from the inside out with this two-hour Family Sumo Workshop in Ryogoku, the birthplace of sumo. Spend the first hour side by side with adults and kids, training, playing, and learning on a real dohyo (sumo ring). In the second hour, savor a hearty bowl of delicious chanko hotpot, the traditional wrestler’s meal. The program combines live performance with hands-on practice at a themed restaurant in sumo’s historic heart.
Your bilingual MC (English & Japanese) kicks off with stories of sumo’s sacred rituals. Then, two former wrestlers demonstrate the essential drills—shiko (leg-stomping), teppo (push strikes), and suri-ashi (sliding footwork)—before inviting everyone into the ring. Join at your own pace or capture the action from the front-row benches. Parents are welcome to participate or film.
After learning the basics, watch a thrilling mini bout between the pros, complete with classic winning techniques. Finally, it’s time for the audience challenge: a brave volunteer dons a padded sumo suit and faces off against a 160 kg giant. Laughter and bragging rights are guaranteed!
The experience wraps up with an open photo session on the dohyo—no extra fees, no time limits—so you can capture unforgettable moments with the wrestlers.
After photos, enjoy a mini chanko hotpot, packed with protein and flavor. Vegan, vegetarian, and allergy-friendly options are available with 48-hour notice, and soft drinks are included.
Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, teens, or grandparents, this interactive workshop makes sumo accessible and fun for the whole family. No prior knowledge or special clothing required—just bring your curiosity and energy for an unforgettable two hours.
